Ellington Pens have very kindly sent me The Stealth to review. I know nothing about this brand but so long as the product sent can fit with this project and they are aware that I’m honest with my words, I’ll review.
When initially contacted I mentioned that that if they wanted me to review one of their pens, they send me something robust and stylish that an adventurer/sailor/artist could use in any situation to write and illustrate a diary, journal or ship’s logbook.
The Stealth arrived a couple of days later properly packaged in a decent box (with a sleeve) with three cartridges and a converter.
I liked the look of it immediately. Sleek and understated The Stealth is tastefully finished in matte black with gloss black detailing. The gloss black nib features a single light grey copperplate script letter E. And, crucially for me, when held, it felt warm and comfortable – steel barrels can often feel cold. And the no nonsense cap simply slides and clicks securely to the barrel.
So, I put it to the test. If a sailor wants to use an ink pen, the ink obviously has be a fountain pen friendly water resistant pigment ink. And by coincidence I had some Diamine Raven Forever Ink to hand.
I also have a couple of lovely soft cover journals from Choosing and Keeping. Ideal for this kind of test. The ink flow was good and the nib felt smooth over the paper.
And for the illustrations? I had asked for an extra fine nib for this very purpose. And I think it did the job rather well. I added the half tones with a watercolour brush. And crucially, the handwriting and illustrations are safe from any sea spray!
So, the big questions: Do you need one? Should you get one? The 9,700+ five star reviews on their website would suggest that you ought to. I like this pen. It has a luxury feel to it, looks great, is robust and performs well. But the compelling factor – and a very pleasant surprise – is the price! £49.95 (GBP)!!! Now that is value for money and with Christmas fast approaching… If you’d like further information about The Stealth click here. Thought I ought to mention that Ellington Pens are currently offering a 20% discount on most pens including The Stealth! What’s not to like?
