Pennonia Ink Lab Swatch Tests

Pennonia sprung to life in 2018 out of a passion for all things fountain pen. At first, the original plan was to sell fountain pens and related accessories however, in order to stand out from the crowd, Pennonia decided to offer something unique that established shops couldn’t – handmade inks.

With continual experimentation with new dyes, mixes, shades, effects etc. many of these creations are sometimes too good to be disposed of. So, instead of throwing away litres of perfectly good ink the Ink Laboratory has been created to showcase and keep these inks until the space or containers are needed for something else or until stocks run out.

These are always small production runs, most of them of about 15-30 bottles and only on rare occasions are there be more than that. The seven unique colours below have been very kindly sent to me by Anja at Papier und Stift who has these in stock:

The inks do not have any names and are identified by their internal recipe codes: 4AAA, 4AAI, 4AAK, 3AAI, 3AAF, 3AAJ and 2AAA. All of them mix easily with water revealing all sorts of sublte chromo. The reaction to bleach from a couple of them is simply stunning and one or two even show hints of sheen. I’ve used a heavy Bockingford rough watercolour paper to test these on. They’re gorgeous.

And HEY! If you’re interested to know more about how to use fountain pen inks in more creative ways – whether it’s simply to observe their chromatic behaviours, or, to recreate one of my swatch cards, or, to learn how to use them in watercolour painting, illustration and calligraphy, why not check out my online course?
